Am I making you uncomfortable?

So I started out writing this blog on a mission to change the states funding for ongoing programs for sexual assault/abuse victims. And to get Jasmine's story out there. What I have found through my writing and talking to people, is that first and for-most, people need more awareness and education. People know so little about this horrible thing that happens to hundreds of children (and adults) everyday.  Did you know approximately 1 in every 3 girls and 1 in every 6 boys will experience sexual abuse before age 18? Did you know that almost 100% of the time, the offender threatens serious harm and even death if they tell? Did you know that almost 100% of the time, they are also physically, and mentally abused. Did you know that approximately 60% of victims dont tell until almost 20 years after the abuse took place? Did you know that approximately 40% of the children that do tell shortly after the abuse occurred, arent believed by family members?  Am I making you uncomfortable yet? Well, Im sorry...these are actual facts.  This is a tragic epidemic that can be stopped if we all step in to help.  Yes, it is uncomfortable to hear about, but think about the children who have gone through this? Think about their story. Think about how uncomfortable, scary and painful this was for THEM! I have had to hear first hand, in my daughters own words, every detail of what happened to her. I can not even begin to tell you how hard that was for me. But SHE went through it. It HAPPENED to HER. These victims/survivors NEED to tell their stories. They NEED to get it out and get help. We as adults need to suck it up, and listen, and help them. Many people have said to me that they would rather just live in denial that this actually happens. Its a really horrbile thing to think about. Again, think about the children this happens to. This about the adults this happens. These victims need to be able to talk about this with out shame. They have nothing to be ashamed of. The OFFENDERS should be ashamed. So I am going to keep talking about it. and I dont care who and how much they are uncomfortable. Hearing about diarrhea , and bladder incontinence, and male impotence is uncomfortable, but that doesnt stop anyone from putting commercials up all over the place about it. So my focus is shifting for right now. I am going to continue to try to bring awareness, educate, and help.  I am going to find a way to help. Because my daughter needs to have her story out there, and so do so many other children.
